Meeting the Needs of Children in the Greater Dallas/Fort Worth Community

As the Nelson Children’s Center in Denton closed its doors, other doors are opening for the many children in need of our services in the mid-cities area. A transition is underway, from the physical building known as the Nelson Children’s Center into children’s services with a broader, more extensive outreach: the Nelson Children’s Ministries.

Foster Care

We currently serve more than 300 children in foster homes throughout the Metroplex. Our goal is to expand this number significantly, so that more children removed from unsuitable homes in the area can be placed within their own communities, with loving LSS Foster In Texas (FIT) families. By refocusing from Denton to the DFW area, we can help many more children in the future.

Future Residential Treatment Facility

Dallas County does not have a children’s residential treatment center. Children with behaviors too severe to function in foster care have had to be placed outside their communities – some went to the Nelson Center and more found themselves in more distant settings, as far away as Houston. We are doing our due diligence regarding the feasibility of developing, building, and operating a new residential treatment center in the Metroplex.

While it was a very difficult decision to close the Nelson Center, we know that our services can have an even greater impact, for a larger population. We will have many new opportunities for volunteers and supporters to get involved. The location of the Nelson Children’s Ministries will shift from Denton to the DFW area, but what will not change is the critical need of the abused and troubled children who rely on our services.
